How to decorate for a griha pravesh puja at home
Start with your pandit, not the décor
The muhurat, the rituals and the items the puja needs all shape the setup. Ask your pandit early for the date and time, whether there will be a havan, where the puja should face, and the list of ceremony items. Families from different regions and traditions do this differently, so treat everything below as a starting point to adapt, not a rulebook.
Build the setup in six steps
- Choose the focal spot.Pick a wall with floor space in front for the priest and the family to sit, and for the havan if you're having one. Measure its width and height before you buy or rent anything.
- Put up the backdrop.A freestanding frame with two or three layers of drapes gives you a finished look without nails. Marigold, red, white and green are common choices. Hang garland strings vertically from the frame for depth.
- Place the mandir or altar.A low stand or table covered with cloth holds the deity images, kalash and puja thali your family uses. Leave room in front of it for offerings.
- Add seating.Low stools or floor cushions (asans) for the priest and the couple or family performing the puja. Keep a clear path for people to come forward.
- Dress the entrance.A toran of mango leaves or marigolds over the main door and a rangoli at the threshold set the tone before guests step inside.
- Light it.Diyas and decorative lamps belong on stable, non-flammable surfaces. Warm string lights behind the drapes are safer than open flames near fabric.
Fresh or artificial flowers?
Use fresh flowers where they're part of the puja itself: offerings, the thali and garlands for the deity. Artificial marigold strings work well for the backdrop and toran, since they last through the day, don't wilt in the heat, and can be reused.
Two-week checklist
Two weeks before
- Confirm the muhurat, rituals and item list with your pandit.
- Choose and measure the focal wall.
- Decide on colors, and buy, borrow or rent the backdrop, mandir stand and seating.
Two to three days before
- Buy ceremony items and puja samagri.
- Order fresh flowers and mango leaves for pickup the day before.
- Test string lights and plan where every lamp will sit.
The day before
- Assemble the backdrop, mandir and seating.
- Hang the toran and prepare the rangoli design.
- Pick up fresh flowers and keep them cool.
The morning of
- Draw the rangoli, place fresh flowers and set out the thali.
- Place diyas last, away from fabric.
